Well being a girl i quite
understand why so many women are against this kind of movie
saying it is nonsense. The REASON is THEY ARE FEELING
INSECURE!.thats simply the answer why people arenot able
to accept stories like this. Most women in india are
emotionallyinsecure.they are so much scared about what will
happen to them if their husbandleaves them and goes to some other
woman. When Sivakumar has started to feel attracted to
someone and feels no happinesswithout the other girl what is the
point in continuing to live with hiswife?just becoz they are
commited. If i were Sulakshana's position for sure iwould
getout of the relationship without any hatred or anything..it
just can'tbe helped. How can you force a humanbeing to love
someone .It is simply notpossible. How can we change anybody's
feelings?Just becoz they are committed theyare going to screw
their lives if they try to force something thats not there. And
for people who are talking of Indian values and ethics...Do you'l
think that extramarital affairs don't happen in India..They are
there in every part of the society...at all times they had been
there..u'll would accept if you'l had been a little observant..
but people don't acceptit ..they are just not willing to open
their eyes. We will be cheating ourselvesif we keep on believing
all this crap..One simple question to people who thinkhigh about
our values..Why is AIDS spreading so fast..Enough of blowing our
owntrumpet..thatto about things that are not true ...And i know
that the indianvalues and morals also tell us that a women
becomes impure even if she thinks ofanother man ..just thinking
not physical relationship...So ARE YOU'L SURE THATNOBODY
IN INDIA EVEN THINKS ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON OTHER THAN THEIR
LIFEPARTNER?I guess its time that we comeout of these
kind of barriers that we havedeveloped in our mind..Priya

Hi Prabhu,
Shivakumar doesn't get married to Suha at the end of the movie,
as you had mentioned in the review. Sindhu simply hands over
the kid to the
couple and walks away.
I don't think it was such a great movie after all. C'mon, nothing
can ever justify an extra-marital affair. Imagine this, if
Sulakshana had gotten bored with her musician husband and had had
an affair with 'Mridangam' Gurumoorthy because
he is more compassionate towards her. Then?? Would that have gone
well with our audience? Would Prabhu still hail KB as a master
film-maker with revolutionary stories to tell?
In my opinion, Sindhu-B marked the downslide of KB. He felt
compelled to make "Modern" movies to
keep pace with younger film-makers. His later movies like 'Kalki'
are pathetic. The heroine kisses someone simply to prove
that she is a "Modern" woman and not some 'Kattu-patti
pombalai". What kind of a logic is that!!!I'll take his
earlier movies anyday! (has anyone seen KB's 'Naanal'?)

I go with you abhi! I don't understand why some people are crazy
of him and sing his praise ( as a genious ). He
did deliver a few good ones. But not all can be said so. Thinking
he is doing a revolutionary subject like a mother falling for an
youngster, a movie which has two totally unrelated stories (
oru veedu iru vaasal ) are all total humbug - no way
related to real life. i wud say a dubbed movie from telugu wud do
when compared to such stupid stories. Kalki is one such. Prakash
raj, already a bigamist, drives a young girl for a third chance.
Rubbish!!!!! These stories project men having multiple marital
affairs as genuine. There definitely were a number of movies made
on bigamy, eg veera, but that was a full length comedy. People
shouldn't take such movies and such films deserve an utter
failure. Surely, i haven't disliked any director like him!!!!!
Cheers, Kalpana

aiyaiyo kalpana,
KB-fans ellam nammalai kallaala adikka poraanga. you know, last
saturday, i happened to watch 'Naanal' (blade of grass) on sun
TV. what an interesting story line! sure the movie was very
theatrical and all. meaning, it was as if someone had simply put
a movie camera on a stage play. but that did not take away from
the narrative. the movie is about a gang of thieves holding a
family at ransom. the entire movie (except for a few scenes) is
set inside a house and has some superb acting. see if you can
watch it.-abhirami

Thank god, I have some one who hates this movie asmuch as i do...
I wanted to keep a low profile, as I felt like I was always the
one against lollu reviews, like when lollu reviews something as
bad, i find them good and vice versa... (not all thgh,
some of them I do enjoy andagree w/ lollu) Being a KB
fan I hated sindhu bhiravi...
i can not even stand commited ppl. eloping off with an other
person, be it ex boyfrnd like in Taal... be it a man or woman...
it is adharmaam/uethical... one shld know the difference between
commitment and dating... well Indian culture does not have
dating, so according to us all the relations from start r
committed...abhi i am ur fan!!!
FROM : THIYAGS, DAYTON, OHIO
So... after I got cornered by sathya & leo...
knew I wont be able to drive my point... had to get into a
shell... Now when prabhu's in a low.. and when everyone's
giving'm a ride..
I dont think I'll get a better opportunity to get back into
form... thanks guys, all of u...now to the point..So prabhu... u
thought calling KB(widely accepted, great man) a genius &
Sindhu bhairavi(a sooper hit, A class movie) a
great movie was safe bet... nay.. u got it all wrong buddy...
Indian women.. are still very much against xtra marital affairs..
is it? maybe thats y we get all these anti KB comments...
sometimes, I really get confused talking abt Indian culture &
values... the way ppl say.. If u commit u gotta stick to it... in
this movie, everyone knows JKB & his wife are a total
misfit... they were not made for each other.. and ppl here are
trying to drive the point that even if the pair doesnt get along
well.. u gotta stick 'cos u're committed... y ? 'cos Indian
culture, values etc....
In the first place, how can u just commit to live with someone u
dontknow.... U might end up going on... but wat is the point of
living without really enjoying it...Life is not all abt duties,
commitment & control... I'd anyday, prefer to live a cool
life... and still try to sorta keep up with duties, commitment
& control...to get back to the movie... we'll know sindhu
& JKB were a perfect match... and as someone suggested,
sulakshana wud've made a great wife for the
"mirudangam" Delhi...
Balachander had decided on who's gonna be his core.. JKB in this
case... so obviously the movie wud revolve arnd him... talking
abt him... as mentioned, he even tried to make a similar one with
a female in the light... Kalki..it failed miserably...
there is nothing wrong with KB tho'... ppl wudnt accept it... so
u cant really blame KB for that...wat abt.. puthu puthu
arthangal... were u'd both rahman & sithara.. were getting
out of their marriage too... here KB had both his leads.. set for
xtra maritaks...
ppl did accept that movie... guess everyone here wud accept it
tooo... hence extra marital affairs are bound to happen...
Instead of turning a blind eye, and saying xtra maritals are
wrong... we shud try to accept the truth.. maybe harsh.. and look
at case by case.. Remember ppl,JKB dint go and sleep with sluts
out there..
sindhu dint sell herself to some rich bastard !! sulakshana did
wat she'd to 'cos she knew.. sindhu gave JKB wat she cudnt !!
finally, I'd say Sindhu Bairavi was a class movie..as prabhu
rated its a 90s/100 movie...
beautifully depicting a man trying to live his life, getting
stuck with Indian values, culture !!losing his way... and finding
a compromise !!!Thiags.

I don't care people talking about anybody except Gandhimathi. She
is the most beautiful actress of all times.
BTW, Gandhimathi had a heart surgery few days ago. She's
recovering from it. Seems like Loose Mohan came forward to donate
blood.....
FROM : BALAJI
I also have the same point of view like geeta does. Whatever u
decide be comitted to it. It makes no sense to switch after
making a decision. That just shows the cowardice &
inefficienty to handle asituation. No man would accept their wife
to have an extra- marital affair. Contrarily they expect their
wife to be considerate if they have an affair. Makes nosense. I
bet if as abhirami said, the movie projected sulakshana having an
affair with the ottu vadhyam character the movie would not have
run for 10 days....Paradox of bias!regards, balaji.
FROM : THIYAGS, DAYTON, OHIO
Ok! as u say having an affair after getting married is bad.. but
wat abt Suhasini, is it fine to have an affair with a married
person... wonder y everyone is taking sivakumar's case !!!
And letting suhasini off the hook !!
nothing can happen, if its jus the guy or the gal wishes.. its
gotta be happening for both of'em... Sivakumar dint rape
suhasini.. or she dint use him for any personal gains. They'd met
the right partners, but a bit late... they spent the times of
their life, owing to the society decided to compromise &
split..thats it !!!!
FROM : BALAJI YOGESH, PHILADELPHIA, PA
Thiags, I think u r confsing two things. Indian Values/Culture on
one hand and extra maritalaffairs on other hand.
No body is perfrect fit for anybody else. It all depends on how
well two people understand each other. In this case JKB &
Suhasini had a better understanding than JKB and Sulakshana. The
problem is with JKB. He should understand the background of his
wife and make her feel comfortable instead of demean -ing her.
Just because he is a music genius does not give him the rigth to
intimidate his wife and loaf around somebody who has some good
understanding of music. Such an extra marital affair is not
worthfilming.
Indian Culture on the other hand does say that u live u life
cool; with out tensions and worry. How? Be u r self and help
others be themselves. Thats basic idea of respecting elders and
worshipping etc etc.. to supress the 'ego'/self supremacy...
Indian Values bans extra-marital affair for the sole reason that
if a man roams behind 10 women he is bound to get AIDS and allied
VD's.What say?regards,balaji
FROM : KALPANA, MADRAS, INDIA
Gandhimathi is a good actress and the most beautiful of all. She
has a peculiar nerve running in her face which gives a twitch
while acting and she makes a horrendous "nnnnnaaahhhhh
" all the while swaying from left to right.
I bet even a professional dancer cannot make such a movement so
naturally. Satya, u have a terrible sense of beauty !!!! U are
the right person to talk about gandhimathi and loose M. But the
story looks a bit twisted....Tell again..who gave blood to whommm

Kalpana !
I am totally against your Comments ! In the movie
"SUHASINI" very well know that he is a married
guy right. Why the hell she accepted SHIVA KUMAR's Love. You
girls say that you are against the story right. If that is the
case when Shiva proposed Suha why can Suha kick him from her
house and ask him to have fun with his wife. Why you want to
blame Balachander for this silly thing.

it is very easy to be critical....something that comes naturally
to most of us but.. i think the bottom line in the movie is life
is not always fair. it is not always black and white but many a
times grey and it is not abt right and wrong. what is right for
one person may be wrong for another...most of the things in life
are not absolute (like the speed of light) but relative.
i completely sympathize with the character
"sindhu"...what did she get out of life....an
illegitimate child grows into a insecure woman....seeks
luv...gets it for a short while....but can't ask for more. that
is sad. but that i guess that is the reality in some people's
life. i luv the way the character has been potrayed. i guess
suhasini did a good job in it.
i think the movie spoke more abt insecurities...than xtra marital
affairs! Bhairavi is insecure..'cos she cannot live up to her
husbands expectations! Sindhu is insecure 'cos she is in a no
gain situation but still tries to gain something out of it. JKB
is insecure 'cos he cannot make a decision that will not hurt the
people involved.
i think the characters are deep and atleast for some people there
if food for thght ;-)sowmya
FROM : THIYAGS, DAYTON, OHIO
balaji...
first I'm not against indian values/cultures...I just feel..
they're a bit outdated.. not meeting today's reality..
I'm not talking for bigamy or xtra marital affairs..Wat I'm
trying to say is.. dont generalise matters..each & every case
is diff.. and in some of those cases those affairs might be
acceptable - not for all tho'... back to Sindhu Bairavi..
y again pointing the fingers at JKB... for is he the one to
understand Bairavi and carry her all arnd.. life's abt sharing...
I dont want to be a burden nor I want my wife to be one... I'd
expect bairavi to understand JKB also.. its very natural to get
irritated by a mixie, when u're listening to something sweet...
and it is very stupid of her to use the mixie when ur partner is
listening to something nice....
everything is a factor...u cant point a single person... for me,
every character is fine.. but in the wrong place..when they find
the right place, they're not able to take it...ending up in a
compromise - here's where our values/culture creeps in.. so how
many of us.. talking abt values really keep it up !! huh!!I dunno
abt the gals.. but the guys ??
alcohol/smoking is wrong to our system.. I dont think all of us
are teetotallers...our system doesnt promote night clubs &
strip clubs.. wonder, how many of us havent gone there ?
I'm not saying the above are wrong.. we're jus being convenient
in saying something & not following it.. I'm jus trying to
say wat I feel I'd follow !! thats it!!Thiags.

prabhu i think u shud be more careful in writing ur reviews. i
guess u shud read ur reviews before ur post them! i am sorry to
bring this up but i guess i have to
1. Ur facts abt the movies have to be
accurate... this movie came sometime in 1986/87 and not in the
early nineties.
2. as abhi mentioned JKB doesn't get married to
sindhu....i guess u can avoid mistakes like this...this is
something that u cannnot mess up with.
3. u have said "The guy who is not able to
give a child to his Official wife gives it to Suhasini and also
presents a Finger Ring to her" shudn't it be more like his
wife was unable to bear a child... i wonder how a man can be
partial and not be able to give his official wife a child but can
do the same with another woman..something fishy huh!! this is
more like misinterpretation of facts!

Your review of Sindhu Bhairavi was really good as like any of

Shiva Kumar.
I dont think so Gajapathy played SITAR. I think it is THAMBURA.

Fisrt time when i watched the movie i didn't like it at all.At that age couldn't take something like this..but when i watched the movie recently i found a lot of difference. Most of K.B's movies deal with intelligent characters...why i call themintelligent is, those characters do what they really wanto and care about, without being what the society wants them to be...they don't settle for anything less than what they want..his characters are not the usual romeo college guy,or thiaga semul kind of usual characters we find in all moviesI don't feel those characters and relationships K.B potrays in his movies are inany way complex.infact i feel they are more starightforward.thatis how thosecharacters are..just becoz we cannot accept becoz of our social conditioning wecannot say they are complicated. and onething i noticed isthere is a big crowdwhich can appreciate these relationships only in movies ???anyway hats off to K.B..the music was good but i feel the storyline is the base of the movie..

This is a great movie which i saw 3 4 times. Its an all time hit.
Another important aspect to note about our mastero ilayaraja is
that
he
has taken care in the song kalaivaniye which is a come back for
jkb in that movie and it contains only aarohanam and not
avarohanam. One must not also miss the punching lines of
vairamuthu especially in the song nan oru sindhu which depicts
the back ground of suhasini she meets her mother and she is not
able to express her emotions and says "garbathil nane
kalindhu iruppene" those days ilayaraja vairamuthu combi
worked very well and the sades part is this was the last film in
which ilayaraja and vairamuthu worked together and after that we
couldn't enjoy their combi. Prabu ur comment is as usual
excellent and i don ve words to appreciate u. And Im very happy
that u too enjoy balu's movies like me....
